Boston Professional Sports Teams
Fans have much to Celebrate

By Johanna LaBlanc, Babson College class of 2009

At the 2008 Boston Celtics championship parade I saw a grinning boy hold up a sign that says it all: “9 years old, 6 parades.” Lately it seems that a Boston sports team brings home a championship every year, and the phrase “rolling rally” has become part of our vocabulary.

It wasn’t always this way. The infamous “curse of the Bambino” hung over the city for decades, and the Celtics, Bruins, and Patriots have all had their share of struggles. But these days it’s a blast to be a Boston sports fan.

In our dorm, a large group of us watched the historic 17th championship win over the rival Los Angeles Lakers which truly marked a new era for the Celtics. The Boston “Three Party”, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett, were the driving force in the best single season turnaround in NBA history.

Across town at Fenway Park, the oldest Major League baseball park in America, we often sit in the bleacher seats dressed in Red Sox hats and shirts and try to catch a David “Big Papi” home run. Then during the eighth inning, we belt out the tune “Sweet Caroline” along with thousands of proud members of the “Red Sox Nation.”

When we’re in the mood for hockey we catch the other Boston “B”– the Bruins - in an electric atmosphere that only Boston fans can create. The good news is that Monday through Thursday are student nights, with tickets costing only $23.50 with a college I.D. Meanwhile, in Foxboro’s Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, we can watch the championship team take the field, although some of the guys spend their time gazing at the famed Patriots Cheerleaders instead! We’ve seen some of the greatest names in football today like Tom Brady, Randy Moss, Rodney Harrison, and Tedy Bruschi tackle, run, and throw up and down the field.

It’s a fact that Boston sports teams are truly remarkable. But what I love most about Boston sports is the FANS. Some may call us ridiculous, rude, and cocky, but Boston fans are the most loyal, fun, and supportive fans around. Come join the fun!
